Trade and Commerce

Trade and Business are developing day by day in Bheramara Upazila. There are also food companies, factories, several pharmaceutical factories, auto rice mills, rice mills, brick kilns, biscuit factories, cinema halls, filling stations, bank insurance companies. Many people of the upazila are involved in trade and commerce.

Competition on the increase: Once upon a time, people used to plant trees around their backyards as a hobby. The issue of nurseries in private could not be imagined. At present there is a lot of competition in the nursery sector. According to a 2009 survey, there are about 12,000 small and large private nurseries in Bangladesh. MA Haque, organizing secretary of the Bangladesh Nursery Owners' Association, said a month-long tree fair is held at the National Parade Square every year with the participation of investors in the nursery, organized by the Social Forest Department. There are applications from about 200 to 250 organizations. From there, 150 companies were selected and allowed to provide tree stalls. If you want to participate in the fair, you have to follow some particular rules. The rules include having three types of trees - such as forest, fruit and herbs. They have to have trade license, adequate amount of saplings and submit a pay-order of five thousand taka.

Institutional co-operation: Various government and non-government organizations have taken various initiatives for the development and expansion of nurseries, said Amjad Hossain, the Chief Scientific Officer of the Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. He said the Nursery Act 2010 was enacted in February, which states that no person can set up a nursery without registration. There should be a mother garden for transplanting seedlings, in case of quality transplanting, the seedlings should be at least one year old, the stem length should be four times longer than the roots. In addition, a project called Combined Agroforestry Development Program (AFIP) with financial support from the Swiss Development Corporation has been working on nursery development for a long time. This will control the process of seedling conservation from seedling production to marketing. In collaboration with Bangladesh Agriculture Extension Department, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, BRAC and Proshika.

Training and practical knowledge: Appropriate training and practical knowledge are prerequisite to invest in the nursery sector. M Rakib, an agronomist, said, "Since we are an agricultural country, everyone has some ideas about planting and caring for trees." So it can be said that investing in a nursery is an easy step. They are being trained by various government and non-government organizations, nursery owners, gardeners and farmers in this regard. Bangladesh Department of Agricultural Extension, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Department of Youth Development, BRAC, Proshika are some of them. These institutions provide technical training with clear idea about the overall activities of the nursery in different periods. In addition, the Department of Agricultural Extension is going to transform the nursery at Asadgate into an Urban Horticulture Institute. This will play a huge role in greening the city and training investors in nurseries.

How to start: First you need to get a personal registration from the Department of Agricultural Extension as per the Nursery Act 2010. Polybags or earthenware pots are very important for investing in nurseries. These can be found in New Market, Chankharpul and various regional markets, including Chawkbazar in Old Dhaka. Pankaj Kanti Majumder, an agriculturist from Phulpur Upazila in Khulna, said the key to land selection is to select well-drained and elevated land so that water does not freeze. Loamy soil is good for making nursery beds. Land with plenty of light and air is quite suitable for nursery. It is better if the nursery is on the side of the road. It has the facility to transfer all the necessary items of the nursery. In addition, marketing facilities are also available. It is very important for the nursery to have a fresh water tank. Some seedlings cannot tolerate excess rainfall and scorching sun. In that case you need to arrange shade by using the tent as needed. It is important to use a canopy for the seedlings even after removing the seedlings from the soil for sale. Care should be taken to ensure that the animals do not harm the nursery. Good quality seedlings and seeds should be collected and arrangements should be made to extract seedlings from them. Plenty of organic fertilizer should be used. Seedlings have to be made according to the market demand.

Collection of seeds and saplings: It is necessary to save the saplings of trees using hardening method at the right time, said agriculturist Badal Chandra Biswas. Hardening is a method that has to be followed in preserving and uplifting the seedlings, he said. The seedlings should be lifted in such a way that the size of the tree is four times longer than its root. And during transplanting, first, the roots of one side should be cut off and then after a week the roots of the other side should be cut and the seedlings should be removed so that the fear of death of the seedlings is less. The special aspects of making seedlings are collection of seeds and selection of mother plants for cuttings. The desired tree needs to be properly replaced by collecting the scion of improved species. Seeds should be stored in a shady cool place so that water vapor does not cause any damage to the seeds. Seeds should be stored during the rainy season using airtight method.

Eco-friendly trees needed: It would not be right to cultivate trees that harm the environment in the nursery. Some trees, especially eucalyptus and acacia, are not conducive to the environment, said agronomist Pankaj Majumder. Such trees absorb excessive amounts of water, resulting in desertification. In addition, the smell of eucalyptus flowers is deadly to asthma patients. Birds cannot build nests in this tree and there is no possibility of breeding through birds. After all, the wood of this tree is not so durable. Therefore, the Department of Agricultural Extension and the Agricultural Research Institute have started activities for the expansion of fruit trees rather than forest trees.

Social movement: If there is love for trees, it can be fulfilled by investing in the nursery sector. Besides, it is possible to build a social movement, said MA Wadud, an agriculturist and owner of Herbal Nursery. ‘I have been investing in nurseries for two years. The laziness in my leisure life could not hold me. My nursery has about 400 and a half species of tree saplings. In addition to the welfare of the people in the urban areas, I also get financial support. '

Profitable field: “Nursery is a profitable field for investment” said MA Haque. Every year thousands of tree lovers gather at the tree fair. In the tree fair, there is a great demand for various varieties of flowers, orchids and fruits as well as various spicy plants. Even from abroad comes the demand for different species of orchids, spices and flowers. According to him, the nursery owners cannot provide it. Apart from this, there is no market for plants produced in nurseries like rice market, cattle market etc. in Bangladesh. Nursery owners do not get a chance to present their products to the buyers except at the fair. So the nursery sector officially needs a specific market, where nursery owners can take advantage of marketing the saplings of the trees they produce.
